Introduction to procurement

Good procurement practice is the driving force for business in the 21st century. The procurement function is based on efficient service delivery and good customer service thereby creating a competitive edge. Businesses need to place emphasis on procurement management activities to be able to remain competitive. This introductory course will support new practitioners or those who need a refresher to develop an overview of the role and function of procurement. At the end of this course, delegates will have gained comprehensive coverage of all of the major procurement legislation and disciplines to ensure they have an awareness of key steps in the procurement process.

This is a two (2) day intensive course. The course is conducted through:

  • Regular scheduled public courses
  • On-site (In house) courses for organisations or sectors’

The course is ideal for new recruits or professionals transitioning from other parts of the business, ‘Pathways to Procurement’ encourages interaction of peers and the building of networks.

Relevant work experience

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the key principles and foundation for procurement.
  • Explain the various types of procurement.
  • Explain how procurement decisions are determined by the organisation’s competitive priorities, its resource capabilities and the environment.
  • Identify procurement organisational designs and the intervention of technologies in the purchasing process.
  • Identify the basic considerations for a procurement specification, supplier market research and for developing supply strategies for different supplier portfolios.
  • Identify and select suitable suppliers for the organisation, the evaluation criteria, the challenges of buying from overseas and the importance of negotiating in procurement effectiveness.
  • Module 1: Introduction to procurement management
  • Module 2: Procurement for competitive advantage
  • Module 3: Procurement structures in organisations
  • Module 4: The role of technology in procurement
  • Module 5:  Supplier management
  • Module 6: Supplier selection and evaluation

This practical two-day course is designed for personal development. The format of the workshop will be highly interactive, reflective and relevant to the participants. The facilitators will stimulate discussion relating to your work experiences. This will be followed by small group activities to enable you to gain practical experience in new ideas, and to relate them to your own experiences.

A certificate of completion of course will be awarded to delegates who attend and complete the training course as well as the award of CPD points.
