REPORT WRITING SKILLS

This 2 day course provides delegates with essential knowledge and skills to be able to write professional and scientific reports that conform to conventional formats and communicate their message as effectively and efficiently as possible to all stakeholders and/or decision makers. Good report-writing skills have become essential for managers and employees, and this course specifically looks into various report types that require certain research and interpretation methods. Delegates are shown how to plan, write and edit reports for use as executive decision-making tools, including validation in order to present credible reports for management evaluation.

This is a two (2) day intensive course. The course is conducted through:

  • Regular scheduled public courses
  • On-site (In house) courses for organisations or sectors’

The course will benefit office professionals who are responsible for developing and
presenting information in report format.

Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of different report types, and in particular
analytical reports that require research
• Know how to interpret and respond to briefs/terms of reference
• Be aware of the different phases in the report-writing process, and be able to
apply them recursively
• Know which main elements are regularly included in reports, and how they are
typically ordered
• Know which style, tense and level of formality to use, and how these are
influenced by the (various) audience(s) that might read the report, and
• Write a full-length analytical (scientific or professional) report in response to an
authentic brief from the participant’s line-manager or supervisor (which should
be provided to the course presenter at least three days before the start of the
course).

Module 5: Editing and revising your report

This is a credit bearing course and aligned to the unit standard (US 12153). The
format of the workshop will be highly interactive, reflective and relevant to
participants. Therefore, the course will involve lectures, Practical exercises, Case
Studies:

  • Lectures: approximately 60%
  • Practical exercises: Group interaction/ team work on practical exercises and
    case studies approximately 40%

Assessment of this module will be both formative and summative. The summative
assessment at the end of the module will test whether the learner can meet the set
standards. Learners will be required to successfully complete a Portfolio of Evidence (POE) which will be assessed and moderated.

After successful completion of the course and assignment the participants will
receive a certificate of competence, which carries 5 credits at NQF level 4.
